I looked into the possibility of finding a will for Hezekiah Gray and James Gray. Both died in what is now Hale County, Alabama. However, Hale County, Alabama wasn't formed till about 1867. For information about relatives before that time, you must check with all the counties that were used to form Hale County.

The counties are: Greene, Perry, Marengo, and Tuscaloosa. There is a chance that some records may be in neighboring Bibb county, also.

There was a marriage in Oglethorpe County between Abraham Gray, and Sally Stout, on February 7, 1800. He was on the 1820 Census for Laurens Co., SC, but all male children were under 10.

I found in a list of Madison County Marriages,

Gray, Nathaniel m. Susan Gray 11 Nov 1855

I noted this since this is a possiblity for S. E. Gray (sister to Wm. J. Gray).

For the 1830 Census in Oglethorpe County, there was a George Gray, and a John Pratt both listed as follows:

1830 Oglethorpe County, Georgia......page 67 Capt Hargrove's District

George Gray...........2110010000000-0210010000000 000000 010000

1830 Oglethorpe County, Georgia ....page 95 Capt. Walker's District

John Pratt............1111100010000-1101101010000 000000 000000

I'd like to locate these families on the 1820 Census to see if they had children that could be Reese Gray, and Martha Jane Pratt, respectively. Reese and Martha Jane married on September 10, 1829, and they were on the 1830 Census for Elbert County.

The second oldest son of Hezekiah Gray was James, and he is burried at a cemetery located at Walnut Lane Plantaton Site near Havana, Alabama. Since it looks like Reece may have moved onto the Hezekiah Gray farm in Elbert County when Hezekiah moved away, I'm looking into the possibility that Reece was a grandson of Hezekiah. The cemetery records show,

James Gray b.8-30-1791 d.3-30-1845 age 54

So, James Gray would have been around 18 years of age when Reece was born. No record of a marriage, so far.

There is a "Reece Cemetery" in Oglethorpe County, which borders Elbert County. There is also a "Reese Cemetery" in Warren County which is several counties away from Elbert County.

Not transcription could be found for either.
